Lasius niger (black garden ant) is the most recommended beginner species due to easy care, fast colony growth, and tolerance for a wide range of conditions.
Substrate depth varies by species: 15 mm for small garden ants, up to 30 mm for leafcutters. The substrate holds moisture and allows natural digging behavior.
Most common pet ant species thrive between 40–70% humidity. The nest should have a moisture gradient from wet to dry so ants can choose optimal conditions.
