Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How big should a parrot cage be?

A parrot cage must be wide enough for full wingspan extension without touching bars. Minimum width equals 2–3x the bird's wingspan. Height is less critical than width.

  • Budgie/cockatiel: minimum 18" × 18" × 24" (width matters more than height)
  • Conure/lovebird: minimum 24" × 24" × 30" with 5/8"–3/4" bar spacing
  • African Grey/Amazon: minimum 36" × 24" × 48" with 3/4"–1" bar spacing
  • Macaw (large): minimum 48" × 36" × 60" with 1"–1.5" bar spacing
  • These are minimums — larger is always better for long-lived parrots
SpeciesMin Size (W×D×H)Bar SpacingWingspan
Budgie18×18×24"3/8"–1/2"10"
Cockatiel24×18×24"1/2"–5/8"14"
African Grey36×24×48"3/4"–1"20"
Macaw (Large)48×36×60"1"–1.5"36"
Q

What bar spacing is safe for my parrot?

Bar spacing must be narrow enough that the bird cannot push its head between bars. Too-wide spacing causes head entrapment injuries or escape.

  • Finches/budgies: 3/8"–1/2" maximum (smallest common spacing)
  • Cockatiels/lovebirds: 1/2"–5/8" maximum
  • Conures/small parrots: 5/8"–3/4" maximum
  • African Grey/Amazon: 3/4"–1" maximum
  • Macaw/cockatoo: 1"–1.5" (need thick bars they can't bend)
Q

How many perches and toys should a cage have?

Provide 3–6 perches of varying diameters and materials plus 3–7 toys rotated weekly. Perches should cover different grip widths to prevent foot problems.

  • Small parrots (budgie/cockatiel): 3–4 perches, 3–4 toys
  • Medium parrots (conure/grey): 4–5 perches, 5–6 toys
  • Large parrots (macaw/cockatoo): 5–6 perches, 6–7 toys
  • Include natural wood, rope, and concrete/mineral perches for variety
  • Rotate toys weekly to prevent boredom (keep 2× the in-cage amount on hand)
Q

Should I get a wide or tall cage for my parrot?

Width is more important than height. Parrots fly horizontally, not vertically. A wider cage provides more practical flight and movement space.

  • Prioritize width first, then depth, then height
  • Long flight cages (36"+ wide) are ideal for smaller parrots
  • Height only matters for climbing species (cockatoos, macaws)
  • Corner cages waste space — rectangular cages are more efficient
  • Dome-top cages add height but no usable space; flat or play-top is better
