Cage Setup Tips

Bedding Material

Use paper-based bedding (Carefresh, Kaytee Clean & Cozy). Avoid cedar and pine shavings — aromatic oils damage respiratory systems.

Wheel Surface

Only use solid-surface wheels. Mesh and wire wheels cause bumblefoot (pododermatitis) from repeated friction.

Floor Space Over Levels

Hamsters are burrowers, not climbers. Prioritize a single large floor area over multi-level platforms. Shelves do not count toward minimum area.

Ventilation

Glass tanks need mesh lids for airflow. Bin cages need ventilation holes drilled in the sides and lid. Poor ventilation causes ammonia buildup.

Example Calculations

1Syrian Hamster — Check My Cage (40×20")

Inputs

ModeCheck My Cage
SpeciesSyrian
Cage Length40 in
Cage Width20 in

Result

Floor Area800 sq in
US 450 sq inPASS (+350 sq in)
TVT 775 sq inPASS (+25 sq in)
DieBrain 1,550 sq inFAIL (−750 sq in)
Min Bedding Depth8–12 in
Wheel Size12 in

A 40×20 inch cage provides 800 sq in, meeting US and TVT standards but falling short of the DieBrain enrichment recommendation. For a Syrian hamster, you need at least 8–12 inches of bedding and a 12-inch wheel.

2Roborovski Dwarf — Find Cage Size (TVT)

Inputs

Result

Minimum Floor Area775 sq in
Suggested Dimensions39 × 20 in
Min Bedding Depth6–10 in
Wheel Size8 in
Bar Spacing1/4 in (6 mm) max

The TVT standard requires 775 sq in for a Roborovski dwarf. A 39×20" enclosure meets this. Roborovskis need 6–10 inches of bedding, an 8-inch wheel, and 1/4-inch bar spacing or a solid-walled enclosure.

3Campbell's Dwarf — DieBrain Gold Standard

Result

Minimum Floor Area1,550 sq in
Suggested Dimensions56 × 28 in
Min Bedding Depth6–10 in
Wheel Size8 in
Bar Spacing1/4 in (6 mm) max

The DieBrain enrichment standard requires 1,550 sq in. A 56×28" enclosure provides 1,568 sq in, meeting the recommendation. Campbell's dwarfs need 6–10 inches of bedding and 1/4-inch bar spacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What is the minimum cage size for a hamster?

The minimum depends on which standard you follow. The US minimum is 450 sq in, the German TVT standard requires 775 sq in for all species, and the DieBrain enrichment standard recommends 1,550 sq in for optimal welfare.

  • US minimum: 450 sq in (roughly 30×15 inches) — considered too small by many vets
  • German TVT standard: 775 sq in (roughly 39×20 inches) — widely recommended baseline
  • DieBrain enrichment: 1,550 sq in (roughly 56×28 inches) — gold standard for welfare
  • Syrian hamsters need the largest cages due to their size and territorial behavior
  • All species benefit from as much floor space as possible

Q

How deep should hamster bedding be?

Syrian hamsters need 8–12 inches of bedding to dig proper burrows, while dwarf species need 6–10 inches. The bedding should be deep enough for the hamster to fully bury itself, which is essential for natural burrowing behavior.

  • Syrian hamsters: 8–12 inches of bedding for proper burrowing
  • Dwarf hamsters (Campbell's, Winter White, Roborovski, Chinese): 6–10 inches
  • Paper-based bedding (Kaytee Clean & Cozy, Carefresh) is safest
  • Avoid cedar and pine shavings — aromatic oils cause respiratory damage
  • Mix in some hay or toilet paper strips for nest-building material
SpeciesMin BeddingIdeal BeddingPurpose
Syrian8"10–12"Deep burrow networks
Dwarf Species6"8–10"Shallow burrows and tunnels
Q

What size wheel does a hamster need?

Syrian hamsters need a 12-inch wheel (minimum 10 inches), while dwarf hamsters need an 8-inch wheel (minimum 6.5 inches). The wheel must be large enough that the hamster runs with a straight back — a curved spine causes spinal injuries over time.

  • Syrian hamsters: 12-inch wheel recommended, 10-inch absolute minimum
  • Dwarf hamsters: 8-inch wheel recommended, 6.5-inch minimum
  • If the back curves while running, the wheel is too small
  • Mesh and wire wheels can cause bumblefoot — use solid-surface wheels only
  • Silent spinner or cork-based wheels reduce nighttime noise
Q

What bar spacing is safe for hamsters?

Syrian hamsters need bar spacing of 1/2 inch (12 mm) or less, while dwarf hamsters need 1/4 inch (6 mm) or less. Dwarf species can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps, making bin cages or glass tanks safer alternatives.

  • Syrian hamsters: max 1/2" (12 mm) bar spacing
  • Dwarf hamsters: max 1/4" (6 mm) bar spacing
  • Baby hamsters can escape through wider gaps — use tighter spacing until adult size
  • Bin cages and glass aquariums eliminate bar spacing concerns entirely
  • Wire tops on tank-style cages provide ventilation without escape risk

Syrian (adult)1/2" (12 mm)LowStandard wire cage
Syrian (baby)3/8" (10 mm)MediumBin cage until 8 wk
Dwarf species1/4" (6 mm)HighGlass tank or bin cage
Q

Is 450 square inches enough for a hamster?

The 450 sq in US minimum is widely considered insufficient by veterinary behaviorists. Research shows hamsters in larger enclosures (775+ sq in) display significantly less stress behavior such as bar chewing, excessive wheel running, and cage aggression.

  • 450 sq in is the US pet store minimum — not an animal welfare recommendation
  • The German TVT standard of 775 sq in is based on behavioral research
  • Hamsters in 450 sq in cages show 3–4x more stereotypic behaviors than those in 775+ sq in
  • DieBrain recommends 1,550 sq in for enriched natural living
  • Most hamster rescues and veterinary organizations recommend 600+ sq in minimum
Q

Which hamster species is easiest to care for?

Roborovski and Winter White dwarf hamsters are often considered easiest because they require slightly smaller cages and less bedding, but all hamsters need proper enrichment. Syrian hamsters are the friendliest and easiest to tame but need the most space.

  • Syrian: friendliest, easiest to handle, but needs the largest cage
  • Winter White: calm temperament, smaller cage needs, good for beginners
  • Roborovski: smallest species, very fast and hard to handle, fun to watch
  • Campbell's Dwarf: social in pairs but prone to diabetes — avoid sugary treats
  • Chinese: slender build, can escape narrow gaps, needs secure enclosure
