Temperature
Keep the cage at 60–70°F (15–21°C). Chinchillas overheat above 75°F — they have the densest fur of any land animal (20,000 hairs per sq cm).
Bar Spacing
Maximum 1"{'×'}0.5" bar spacing. Chinchillas are escape artists and can squeeze through surprisingly small openings.
Vertical Space
Chinchillas can jump 6 feet vertically. Minimum cage height is 3 feet, with shelves staggered no more than 12–18 inches apart to prevent injury from falls.
Wire Floors
Avoid wire-bottom cages and wire shelves. Cover all wire surfaces with fleece or wood to prevent bumblefoot. Solid metal pans are preferred for the base.

A 42×24×48" cage provides 7 sq ft of floor and 28 cu ft of volume. All three checks pass for a pair of chinchillas. Four platforms and a 15" wheel are needed.

Three chinchillas require 8 sq ft of floor space, 10.5 cu ft of volume, and at least 6 platforms. Each chinchilla should have its own hiding house to reduce territorial stress.
A single chinchilla needs at least 6 sq ft of floor space (3×2 ft) and 2.5 cu ft of volume. Height is critical — chinchillas are vertical jumpers and need a minimum of 3 ft of cage height with staggered platforms for safe climbing.
| Chinchillas | Floor (sq ft) | Volume (cu ft) | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 | 2.5 | 2 |
| 2 | 7 | 6.5 | 4 |
| 3 | 8 | 10.5 | 6 |

Chinchillas are crepuscular mountain rodents native to the Andes. They can jump up to 6 feet vertically and need height for exercise and mental stimulation. A cage shorter than 3 feet restricts their natural jumping behavior and can lead to stress and obesity.
Chinchilla cages need bar spacing no wider than 1 inch horizontally and 0.5 inches vertically. Chinchillas are flexible escape artists, and wider spacing allows them to squeeze through or get their heads stuck, risking injury or strangulation.
| Feature | Safe | Unsafe |
|---|---|---|
| Bar spacing | 1"×0.5" or smaller | Wider than 1" |
| Wire material | Powder-coated, stainless | Galvanized (zinc-coated) |
| Floor type | Solid with fleece/wood | Wire mesh (causes bumblefoot) |
Each chinchilla needs a minimum of 2 platforms or shelves for jumping exercise and rest spots. Platforms should be solid wood (kiln-dried pine is safe) and staggered at different heights, spaced 12–18 inches apart vertically.
Chinchillas need a minimum 15-inch diameter exercise wheel. Smaller wheels force the chinchilla to arch its back unnaturally while running, which causes spinal injuries over time. The wheel must have a solid running surface — no mesh or wire.
