Male pairs need one size larger. A 2-boar household sizes up to 3-pig specs: 2×5 C&C cage (10.5 sq ft min, 13 sq ft preferred). 14 grids at $2 ($28) + $15 coroplast = $43.

47 × 24 = 1,128 sq in = 7.8 sq ft. This barely passes the 7.5 sq ft minimum for 2 pigs, but falls short of the 10.5 sq ft preferred size. Upgrading to a 2×4 C&C cage would be ideal.
The Humane Society recommends a minimum of 7.5 sq ft for 1-2 guinea pigs, which equals a 2x3 C&C grid cage. More space is always better for their health and happiness.

A C&C (cubes and coroplast) cage uses wire grid panels (14"x14" each) for the frame and a corrugated plastic (coroplast) base. They are the gold standard for guinea pig housing because they are customizable, affordable, and far larger than pet store cages.
Yes. Male guinea pig pairs (boars) are more territorial and need one cage size larger than the standard recommendation. Two boars should have at least a 2x5 C&C cage (10.5 sq ft) rather than the 2x4 recommended for two sows.
Most pet store cages are far too small for guinea pigs. The typical store cage provides only 3-4 sq ft, while even a single guinea pig needs 7.5 sq ft minimum. A C&C cage is more affordable and provides 2-3 times the space.
The coroplast sheet should extend 12 inches beyond the cage grid dimensions on each side to allow for 6-inch-tall folded walls. For a 2x4 cage (56"x28" in grids), you need a coroplast sheet of 80"x52".
