Axolotl Tank Calculator

Calculate the ideal tank setup for your axolotls

Tank Size

Chiller

0.2 HP

20 gal for first + 10 gal per additional

Axolotls need 60–68°F water; above 72°F is dangerous

Recommended Tank

30 × 12 × 12" | 20 gal

Filter

40 GPH

Chiller

0.2 HP

Cooling Plan

Aquarium Chiller Required

Room is 72°F. A 0.2 HP chiller will maintain 60–68°F water.

Clip-on fans can drop temp ~4°F but may not be sufficient alone.

Setup Essentials

Hides2
Weekly Water Change4 gal (20%)
SubstrateFine sand or bare bottom
LightingLow/indirect (no bright lights)

Tips

No Gravel

Axolotls swallow gravel causing impaction. Use fine sand or bare-bottom tanks only.

Cycle First

Fully cycle your tank (4–6 weeks) before adding axolotls. They are very sensitive to ammonia.

Example Calculations

11 Axolotl, 72°F Room

Inputs

Axolotls1
Room Temperature72°F

Result

Tank20-gallon long
Chiller0.2 HP
Filter40 GPH sponge filter

Gallons = 20 + 0 = 20. Chiller = 20/100 = 0.2 HP (room is 72°F > 68°F). Filter = 20 × 2 = 40 GPH.

23 Axolotls, 65°F Room

Inputs

Axolotls3
Room Temperature65°F

Result

Tank40-gallon breeder
ChillerNot needed
Filter80 GPH sponge filter

Gallons = 20 + 2×10 = 40. Room 65°F is within safe range, no chiller needed. Filter = 40 × 2 = 80 GPH.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How big of a tank does an axolotl need?

One axolotl needs a minimum 20-gallon long tank. Each additional axolotl requires 10 more gallons. Long tanks are preferred over tall ones for floor space.

 • 1 axolotl: 20-gallon long minimum (30" × 12" × 12")
 • 2 axolotls: 30-gallon or 29-gallon (30" × 12" × 18")
 • 3 axolotls: 40-gallon breeder (36" × 18" × 16")
 • 4+ axolotls: 55–75 gallon tanks
 • Long tanks preferred — axolotls use floor space, not water column

Q

Do axolotls need a chiller?

If your room temperature stays above 68°F, you likely need a chiller or fan cooling. Axolotls require 60–68°F water. Above 72°F causes stress, disease, and death.

 • 60–64°F: ideal temperature range for axolotls
 • 64–68°F: acceptable but monitor closely
 • 68–72°F: stress zone, clip-on fans may help drop 2–4°F
 • 72°F+: dangerous, aquarium chiller required
 • Chiller sizing: approximately 1/10 HP per 10 gallons of water
Q

What substrate is safe for axolotls?

Fine sand or bare-bottom tanks are the only safe substrate options. Axolotls vacuum-feed from the bottom and will swallow gravel, causing fatal impaction.

 • Bare bottom: safest option, easiest to clean, best for juveniles under 6"
 • Fine sand: natural look, safe for adults (grains pass through digestive tract)
 • NEVER use gravel, pebbles, or large-grain substrate (impaction risk)
 • Pool filter sand and play sand are both safe and affordable options
 • For sand substrate, spot-clean waste and stir sand weekly to prevent gas pockets
Q

What filter should I use for an axolotl tank?

Sponge filters are best for axolotls because they provide gentle flow. Axolotls are sensitive to strong currents and can become stressed by HOB or canister filter outputs.

 • Sponge filter: best overall, gentle flow, excellent biological filtration
 • Canister filter: good if output is baffled or spray bar used to reduce flow
 • HOB filter: acceptable with pre-filter sponge and baffled output
 • Target turnover: 2x tank volume per hour (40 GPH for 20 gallon)
 • Axolotls produce heavy bioload — consider over-filtering by 50%
