Equipment Recommendations

Filter: Canister or HOB rated for 225 GPH (2.5× tank volume). Turtles produce 2–3× more waste than fish.
Heater: 360W submersible heater (75–85°F). Use a heater guard to prevent burns.
UVB Light: 10.0 UVB bulb covering 2/3 of basking area. Replace every 6 months even if still lit.
Basking Spot: 85–90°F. Must fully support turtle out of water.

Recommended Tank90 gallons
Min. Required80 gallons
Filter GPH225
Heater360W
Water Depth20.0"

An 8-inch Red-Eared Slider needs 80 gallons minimum (8 × 10). The next standard tank size up is 90 gallons, with a 225 GPH filter and 360W heater.

2Adult Female Painted Turtle

Inputs

SpeciesPainted Turtle
Shell Length10 inches
Number of Turtles1

Result

Recommended Tank100 gallons
Min. Required100 gallons
Filter GPH250
Heater400W
Water Depth25.0"

A 10-inch Painted Turtle needs exactly 100 gallons (10 × 10), which is a standard tank size. The 250 GPH filter handles their heavy waste output.

3Pair of Common Musk Turtles

Inputs

SpeciesCommon Musk (Stinkpot)
Shell Length4 inches
Number of Turtles2

Result

Recommended Tank75 gallons
Min. Required60 gallons
Filter GPH188
Heater300W
Water Depth8.0"

Two 4-inch musk turtles need 60 gallons minimum (40 base × 1.5 for the second turtle). The next standard size is 75 gallons, giving extra room for territorial separation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How big of a tank does a turtle need?

The standard rule is 10 gallons of tank per inch of shell length. An 8-inch Red-Eared Slider needs at least 80 gallons, and a 120-gallon tank for a full-grown 12-inch female. Always plan for adult size, not current size.

  • Red-Eared Slider (8–12" adult): 80–120 gallon tank minimum
  • Painted Turtle (6–10" adult): 60–100 gallon tank minimum
  • Common Musk/Stinkpot (4–5" adult): 40–50 gallon tank minimum
  • Softshell Turtle (10–18" adult): 100–180 gallon tank minimum
  • Rule: always size for the adult length, not the juvenile size you bought

Softshell10–18"100–180 gal120–180 gal
Q

What size filter does a turtle tank need?

Turtle tanks need a filter rated for 2–3 times the tank volume in GPH (gallons per hour). A 75-gallon turtle tank needs a filter rated for at least 150–225 GPH. Turtles produce far more waste than fish, so standard aquarium filters are undersized.

  • 40-gallon tank: 100–120 GPH canister or HOB filter
  • 75-gallon tank: 188–225 GPH canister filter recommended
  • 120-gallon tank: 300–360 GPH canister filter, possibly two filters
  • Canister filters outperform HOB (hang-on-back) for turtle tanks
  • Clean filter media monthly; replace carbon every 4–6 weeks

Q

How deep should the water be in a turtle tank?

Water depth should be 2–3 times the turtle’s shell length so the turtle can fully submerge and swim freely. An 8-inch Red-Eared Slider needs at least 16–24 inches of water depth. Musk turtles prefer shallower water at 1.5–2 times shell length.

  • Red-Eared Slider (8"): 20" water depth (2.5× shell length)
  • Common Musk (4"): 8" water depth (2× shell length)
  • Softshell (10"): 30" water depth (3× shell length)
  • Box turtles: only 1× shell length, they are terrestrial
  • Always provide a basking area where the turtle can fully dry off above water
Q

Can I keep multiple turtles in the same tank?

Yes, but add 50% more tank volume for each additional turtle. Two 8-inch Red-Eared Sliders need at least 120 gallons (80 base + 40 for the second turtle). Avoid mixing aggressive species, and provide multiple basking spots to reduce territorial behavior.

  • Formula: base gallons × (1 + 0.5 per additional turtle)
  • Two 8" sliders: 80 × 1.5 = 120 gallons minimum
  • Three 4" musk turtles: 40 × 2.0 = 80 gallons minimum
  • Provide one basking spot per turtle to prevent bullying
  • Never house males of the same species together in tight spaces

2 turtles1.5×80 × 1.5120 gal
3 turtles2.0×80 × 2.0160 gal
Q

What wattage heater does a turtle tank need?

Use 3–5 watts per gallon of tank volume. A 75-gallon tank needs a 225–375W heater, and a 120-gallon tank needs 360–600W. In cold rooms below 65°F, use 5W per gallon. Always use a heater guard to prevent the turtle from burning itself.

  • 40-gallon tank: 120–200W heater
  • 75-gallon tank: 225–375W heater (or two 150W heaters)
  • 120-gallon tank: 360–600W heater (or two 200W–300W heaters)
  • Two smaller heaters are safer for 75+ gallon tanks (redundancy)
  • Most aquatic turtles need water temps of 72–85°F depending on species
Q

Do turtles need a basking area in their tank?

Yes, all pet turtles need a dry basking area with a heat lamp (85–95°F) and UVB light. UVB is essential for shell and bone health; without it turtles develop metabolic bone disease. Replace UVB bulbs every 6 months even if they still produce visible light.

  • Basking temperature: 85–95°F depending on species
  • UVB bulb: 10.0 strength, covering 2/3 of the basking platform
  • Replace UVB bulbs every 6 months (UV output decays before visible light fades)
  • Basking platform must support the turtle fully out of water
  • Provide 10–12 hours of light per day on a timer cycle
