Example Calculations

120-gallon medium-tech tank, 3x/week

Inputs

Tank Size20 gallons
Plant LoadMedium
Doses/Week3

Result

Weekly Total~22 mL all nutrients

Each nutrient dosed 3x/week at levels appropriate for medium plant load.

255-gallon high-tech tank, daily dosing

Inputs

Tank Size55 gallons
Plant LoadHigh
Doses/Week7

Result

Weekly Total~90 mL all nutrients

High plant load with CO2 requires 1.5x standard dosing across all macro and micro nutrients daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much fertilizer does a planted aquarium need?

It depends on plant density. Low-tech tanks need about half the dose of high-tech CO2-injected tanks. Start with recommended doses and adjust based on plant health.

  • Low tech: 50% of standard dose, 1–2x per week
  • Medium tech: standard dose, 2–3x per week
  • High tech (CO2): 150% dose, daily or every other day
  • Signs of deficiency: yellowing leaves, holes, stunted growth

Q

What is EI dosing?

Estimative Index (EI) dosing adds excess nutrients so plants never run out. Weekly 50% water changes remove excess to prevent algae. Simple and effective for most tanks.

  • Dose macro (NPK) and micro (Fe, trace) on alternating days
  • 50% water change weekly resets nutrient levels
  • No need to test water parameters with EI method
  • Works best with CO2 injection and good lighting
Q

Can I overdose aquarium fertilizer?

Plants absorb only what they need. Excess nutrients do not directly cause algae — poor plant health and excess light do. However, extreme overdosing can stress fish.

  • 2–3x normal dose is generally safe for fish
  • Iron overdose can harm shrimp at very high levels
  • Regular water changes prevent buildup
  • If algae appears, reduce light before reducing ferts
Q

Should I dose on water change days?

Dose after the water change, not before. The fresh water dilutes nutrients, so dosing immediately after restores them to target levels.

  • Water change first, then dose
  • Some hobbyists skip dosing on water change day
  • EI method: dose full amount after 50% change
  • Lean dosing: skip one dose if doing large change
