20 per row (10 each side). 120 / 20 = 6 rows. Row depth: (16" + 30") / 12 = 3.83 ft × 6 = 23 ft. Width: (10 × 16" / 12) × 2 + 5 = 13.3 × 2 + 5 = 32 ft. Area: 32 × 23 = 736 sq ft.

16 per row (8 each side). 60 / 16 = 3.75 → 4 rows. Row: (18" + 24") / 12 = 3.5 ft × 4 = 14 ft. Width: (8 × 18" / 12) × 2 + 6 = 12 × 2 + 6 = 30 ft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How many rows of chairs do I need for 120 guests?

With two-sided seating at 10 chairs per side (20 per row), 120 guests need 6 rows. With 8 per side: 8 rows. With Chiavari chairs (16" wide, 30" row spacing), 6 rows require about 23 feet of depth. Add 8–10 feet in front for the ceremony area and 3 feet in back for the last row buffer.

  • 10 per side (20/row): 6 rows for 120 guests
  • 8 per side (16/row): 8 rows for 120 guests
  • 12 per side (24/row): 5 rows for 120 guests
  • Chiavari: 16" wide, 30" between rows
  • 6 rows: ~23 ft depth (Chiavari)

Q

How wide should a ceremony aisle be?

A standard ceremony aisle is 5 feet wide, comfortable for one person walking with a dress train. A wide aisle (6 ft) allows father and bride side-by-side without crowding. Extra wide (8 ft) is used for grand entrances, wheelchair accessibility, or when chairs angle inward. Fire codes require minimum 4 ft.

  • Standard: 5 ft (most common)
  • Wide: 6 ft (bride + escort comfortably)
  • Extra wide: 8 ft (grand entrance, ADA)
  • Minimum fire code: 4 ft
  • Add runner width to aisle width (3–4 ft runner on 5 ft aisle)
Q

How much space between ceremony rows?

Space between rows depends on seating style. Pews have 12" between rows (tight). Folding chairs need 24" between rows for guests to stand and sit. Chiavari chairs need 30" because they are lighter and tip easily with less clearance. Benches need 18" between rows. Measure from seat back to seat back.

  • Pews: 12" between rows (backs overlap)
  • Folding chairs: 24" between rows
  • Chiavari: 30" between rows
  • Benches: 18" between rows
  • Measured back-to-back, not edge-to-edge
Q

Should I use one-sided or two-sided ceremony seating?

Two-sided seating (bride and groom sides) is traditional and fits more guests in less depth. 120 guests in two sides of 10 need only 6 rows (23 ft deep). One side of 20 needs 6 rows too, but the seating width doubles to 27+ feet. Use one-sided for small ceremonies (under 40 guests) or non-traditional layouts.

  • Two-sided: traditional, narrower footprint
  • One-sided: wider but same row count
  • Two-sided 120 guests: ~22 ft wide × 23 ft deep
  • One-sided 120 guests: ~27 ft wide × 23 ft deep
  • One-sided works for under 40 guests or round ceremonies
