What is the difference between GVWR and GCWR?

GVWR is the maximum weight for just your vehicle (including passengers, cargo, and tongue weight). GCWR is the maximum combined weight of your vehicle plus everything it is towing. Both are set by the manufacturer and should never be exceeded.

  • GVWR = max weight of vehicle alone (curb + passengers + cargo + tongue)
  • GCWR = max weight of entire rig (vehicle + trailer + everything inside both)
  • GVWR is on the door sticker; GCWR is typically in the owner’s manual only

RV Towing Safety: Matching Your Vehicle to Your Trailer

RV towing safety starts with matching numbers. Your tow vehicle has four critical ratings: max tow rating, GCWR, GVWR, and payload capacity. Your trailer has its own GVWR. Exceeding any single rating creates an unsafe towing situation, even if all other numbers look fine.

The most common mistake is ignoring payload capacity. Tongue weight, passengers, and cargo all count against your vehicle’s GVWR. A truck with 7,500 lb GVWR and 6,000 lb curb weight has only 1,500 lbs for everything: 3 passengers (500 lbs), bed cargo (200 lbs), and tongue weight (800 lbs) = 1,500 lbs exactly at the limit.
