Example Calculations

1Garden Bed with River Rock (20 x 10 ft, 3 inches deep)

Inputs

Length20 ft
Width10 ft
Depth3 inches
Stone TypeRiver Rock (100 lbs/ft³)
Cost per Ton$60

Result

Stone Needed2.50 tons
Area200.0 sq ft
Volume50.0 cu ft
Cubic Yards1.85
Estimated Cost$150

Area = 20 × 10 = 200 sq ft. Volume = 200 × (3/12) = 50 cu ft. Cubic yards = 50 / 27 = 1.85. Tons = (50 × 100) / 2000 = 2.50. Cost = 2.50 × $60 = $150.

2Walkway with Pea Gravel (30 x 4 ft, 4 inches deep)

Inputs

Length30 ft
Width4 ft
Depth4 inches
Stone TypePea Gravel (96 lbs/ft³)
Cost per Ton$60

Result

Stone Needed1.92 tons
Area120.0 sq ft
Volume40.0 cu ft
Cubic Yards1.48
Estimated Cost$115

Area = 30 × 4 = 120 sq ft. Volume = 120 × (4/12) = 40 cu ft. Cubic yards = 40 / 27 = 1.48. Tons = (40 × 96) / 2000 = 1.92. Cost = 1.92 × $60 = $115.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much landscape stone do I need?

Multiply length x width to get the area in square feet. Multiply by the depth in feet to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Most decorative stone covers about 100 sq ft at 3 inches deep per ton.

  • Formula: Length × Width × (Depth in inches / 12) = cubic feet
  • Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards for ordering
  • At 3" depth, 1 ton of most stone covers ~100 sq ft
  • Order 5–10% extra for settling and uneven ground
  • Bulk delivery (by the yard) saves 30–50% vs bagged stone
Q

How many tons of rock do I need per cubic yard?

It depends on the stone type. River rock and crushed granite weigh about 1.35 tons per cubic yard. Pea gravel is about 1.3 tons. Lava rock is much lighter at about 0.67 tons per cubic yard.

  • Lava rock covers twice the area per ton because it is half the weight of river rock
  • Flagstone is the heaviest—order by tonnage carefully to avoid overpaying on delivery
  • Crushed stone packs tighter than round stone, so coverage may be slightly less
  • Always confirm density with your supplier—wet stone weighs 10–15% more than dry

Crushed Granite1001.35~100
Flagstone1602.16~65
Lava Rock500.67~200
Marble Chips951.28~105
Q

How deep should landscape stone be?

For decorative ground cover, use 2-3 inches of stone. For walkways and paths, use 3-4 inches. For drainage areas, use 4-6 inches. Heavier traffic areas need deeper coverage.

  • Deeper coverage prevents weeds better—3" is the minimum for weed suppression
  • Use landscape fabric under stone to extend weed-free life by 3–5 years
  • Smaller stones (pea gravel) shift more underfoot—go deeper for stability
  • Replenish stone every 2–3 years as it settles into soil
ApplicationRecommended DepthStone SizeNotes
Garden bed cover2–3"3/4"–1.5"Decorative, minimal traffic
Walkway / path3–4"3/8"–3/4"Foot traffic, use compactable stone
Driveway base4–6"1"–2"Vehicle loads, compact in lifts
French drain6–12"3/4"–1.5"Surrounds perforated pipe
Q

What is the cheapest landscape stone?

Pea gravel and crushed granite are the most affordable at $30-60 per ton. River rock costs $50-100 per ton. Flagstone and marble chips are the most expensive at $100-300 per ton depending on source.

  • Bulk delivery saves 30–50% compared to buying bagged stone from home centers
  • Delivery fees ($50–$150 per load) are often waived for orders over 5 tons
  • Local quarry stone is always cheaper—imported stone adds freight cost
  • Lava rock costs more per ton but covers 2× the area, making it competitive per sq ft
Stone TypeCost per TonCost per Cu YardBest For
Crushed Granite$30–$50$40–$65Paths, driveways, base
Pea Gravel$30–$60$35–$75Garden beds, walkways
River Rock$50–$100$65–$130Decorative borders, dry creek beds
