Example Calculations

1Standard Room (12 × 10 ft, No Pattern)

Inputs

Room Length12 ft
Room Width10 ft
Ceiling Height8 ft
Doors1
Windows2
Pattern Repeat0 (none)
Roll SizeUS Standard (20.5" × 33 ft)

Result

Rolls Needed8 rolls (includes 1 extra)
Perimeter44 ft
Wall Area352 sq ft
Net Wall Area301 sq ft
Strips Needed26
Strips per Roll4

Perimeter = 2 × (12 + 10) = 44 ft. Strips = 44 ft / (20.5"/12) = 25.8, rounded up to 26. Each roll yields floor(33/8) = 4 strips. Rolls = ceil(26/4) = 7. With 1 extra = 8 rolls.

2Large Room with Pattern (16 × 14 ft, 21" repeat)

Inputs

Room Length16 ft
Room Width14 ft
Ceiling Height9 ft
Doors2
Windows3
Pattern Repeat21 inches
Roll SizeUS Standard (20.5" × 33 ft)

Result

Rolls Needed13 rolls (includes 1 extra)
Perimeter60 ft
Wall Area540 sq ft
Net Wall Area455 sq ft
Strips Needed36
Strips per Roll3

Perimeter = 2 × (16 + 14) = 60 ft. Strips = 60 / (20.5"/12) = 35.1, rounded up to 36. With 21" pattern repeat, effective height per strip = 9 + 1.75 = 10.75 ft. Strips per roll = floor(33/10.75) = 3. Rolls = ceil(36/3) = 12, with 1 extra = 13 rolls.

3Small Bedroom with Pattern (10 × 10 ft, 12" repeat)

Inputs

Room Length10 ft
Room Width10 ft
Ceiling Height8 ft
Doors1
Windows1
Pattern Repeat12 inches
Roll SizeUS Standard (20.5" × 33 ft)

Result

Rolls Needed9 rolls (includes 1 extra)
Perimeter40 ft
Wall Area320 sq ft
Net Wall Area284 sq ft
Strips Needed24
Strips per Roll3

Perimeter = 2 × (10 + 10) = 40 ft. Strips = 40 / (20.5"/12) = 23.4, rounded up to 24. With 12" pattern repeat, effective height = 8 + 1 = 9 ft. Strips per roll = floor(33/9) = 3. Rolls = ceil(24/3) = 8, with 1 extra = 9 rolls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do I calculate how much wallpaper I need?

Measure wall perimeter × wall height = total sq ft. Standard roll covers ~30 sq ft usable (after waste). Divide total by 30 and round up. Example: 50 linear feet × 8 ft = 400 sq ft ÷ 30 = 14 rolls.

  • Measure perimeter of room (all walls)
  • Multiply by ceiling height
  • Standard US roll: ~56 sq ft, ~30 sq ft usable
  • Euro roll: ~58 sq ft, larger format
  • Add 10-15% for waste and pattern matching

Q

What is pattern repeat and how does it affect quantity?

Pattern repeat is the distance before the design repeats vertically. Larger repeats = more waste when matching. No repeat: No extra needed. 12" repeat: Add 10%. 24"+ repeat: Add 15-20%. Match type affects cutting.

  • Straight match: Pattern aligns horizontally
  • Drop match: Every other strip starts at different point
  • Random/no match: Easiest, least waste
  • Check pattern repeat on roll label
  • Larger repeat = more dramatic look but more waste

24"+ repeat20-25%Half-dropDifficult
Q

Should I subtract windows and doors from my calculation?

Only subtract large openings (doors, windows over 3 ft wide). Small windows and the 10-15% waste allowance typically covers them. It's better to have a roll extra than run short mid-project.

  • Large door (3×7 ft): Subtract ~20 sq ft
  • Large window (4×5 ft): Subtract ~20 sq ft
  • Small windows: Don't subtract (covered by waste)
  • Better to have extra (same dye lot for repairs)
  • Keep 1-2 rolls for future repairs/matching
Q

What is the standard wallpaper roll size?

US single roll: 27" wide × 27 ft long (~56 sq ft). US double roll: 27" × 54 ft (~108 sq ft). Euro roll: 21" × 33 ft (~58 sq ft). Usable coverage is 15-30% less due to trimming and pattern matching.

  • Always sold in double rolls in US (despite "single roll" pricing)
  • Euro rolls: Metric, slightly different coverage
  • Commercial vinyl: Much wider rolls
  • Check specifications before ordering

Q

How do I calculate wallpaper for an accent wall?

Measure accent wall width × height = sq ft. Standard 27" wide strips: Divide wall width by 27" for number of strips. Round up. Multiply strips by wall height + waste for total length needed.

  • Measure wall width and height
  • Width ÷ 27" = Number of strips (round up)
  • Each strip length = Wall height + 4-6" waste
  • Total length needed ÷ Roll length = Rolls
  • Single wall: Often just 1-2 double rolls

8 ft4 strips1 roll2 rolls
10 ft5 strips1 roll2 rolls
12 ft6 strips2 rolls2 rolls
15 ft7 strips2 rolls3 rolls
Q

Why should I order from the same dye lot?

Colors can vary slightly between production batches (dye lots). Ordering all wallpaper at once from same lot ensures consistent color. Check lot numbers on rolls. If running short, better to return unopened rolls than reorder different lot.

  • Dye lot: Production batch with identical color
  • Different lots may have slight color variation
  • Order all at once from same shipment
  • Check lot number on each roll before hanging
  • Keep 1-2 extra rolls (same lot) for repairs
  • Most stores allow returns of unopened rolls
