Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How many cloches do I need for my garden?

You need one cloche per plant for individual covers (bell jars, Wall O' Water). For row tunnels, you need one continuous cover per bed row. If you have 12 tomato plants spaced 18 inches apart, you need either 12 individual cloches or an 18 ft row tunnel.

  • Individual cloches: one per plant — bell jars, Wall O' Water, plastic bottles
  • Row tunnel: one per bed, measured by foot of row length
  • 12 plants at 18" spacing = 18 ft row tunnel or 12 individual cloches
  • Wall O' Water: best for tomatoes, protects to 16°F, reusable for 3–5 years
  • Plastic bottles: free, easy to make, protects to about 28°F
Q

Which cloche type is best for tomatoes?

Wall O' Water is the best cloche for tomatoes. The water-filled tubes absorb daytime heat and release it at night, protecting plants down to 16°F. This allows planting tomatoes 4–6 weeks before the last frost date. Each Wall O' Water costs about $8 and lasts 3–5 seasons.

  • Wall O' Water: 18" diameter, protects to 16°F, $8 each, lasts 3–5 years
  • Glass bell jar: 12" diameter, elegant but fragile, $20–25 each
  • Plastic bottle: 6" diameter, free, for seedlings only, protects to ~28°F
  • Row tunnel: covers many plants, $3/ft, best for rows of small transplants
  • Start Wall O' Water 4–6 weeks before last frost for earliest tomatoes
Q

How much frost protection do cloches provide?

Glass bell jars protect to about 24–28°F (4–8°F of protection). Wall O' Water protects to 16°F (20°F of protection). Plastic bottles provide about 4°F of protection. Row tunnels with medium-weight fabric protect to 24°F.

  • Glass bell jar: +4–8°F protection, transmits 90%+ light
  • Wall O' Water: +20°F protection — the warmest individual cloche
  • Plastic bottle: +4°F, 80% light — good for small seedlings only
  • Row tunnel (1.0 oz fabric): +8–10°F, 70% light transmission
  • Double layer (cloche inside row tunnel): +15–20°F combined protection

Q

When should I remove cloches from plants?

Remove cloches when nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F consistently (usually 2–4 weeks after last frost). Remove gradually — vent cloches for a few days first by propping them open, then remove completely. Sudden removal can shock plants.

  • Monitor nighttime lows: remove when consistently above 50°F
  • Harden off: prop open cloches 2–3 days before full removal
  • Wall O' Water: drain water gradually over a week, then remove
  • Overheating risk: daytime temps above 85°F under cloche can cook plants
  • Vent daily once daytime temps exceed 70°F — crack open or remove lids
