Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much row cover fabric do I need?

Fabric width must span over the hoops plus 1 ft on each side for anchoring. For a 4 ft wide bed with 2.5 ft tall hoops, you need about 8 ft wide fabric. Length equals bed length plus 2 ft for end tuck-in. A 4×20 ft bed needs about 22×8 ft = 176 sq ft of fabric.

  • Width: hoop arc length + 2 ft for anchoring on both sides
  • Length: bed length + 2 ft for tucking ends under
  • Standard roll widths: 6, 10, or 12 ft — buy closest to your calculated width
  • For a 4 ft bed with 2.5 ft hoops: ~6 ft arc + 2 ft = 8 ft fabric width
  • Buy 10–15% extra for overlap repairs and replacement
Q

How far apart should row cover hoops be?

Space hoops 3–4 ft apart for most row covers. Use 3 ft spacing in windy areas or with heavy fabric (1.5 oz). Use 4 ft spacing for lightweight fabric (0.5 oz) in sheltered locations. Always add one hoop at each end of the bed.

  • 3 ft spacing: windy sites, heavy fabric, snow load areas
  • 4 ft spacing: calm sites, lightweight fabric, summer insect netting
  • Always include end hoops for fabric support
  • Total hoops = ceil(bed length / spacing) + 1
  • Use #9 galvanized wire or ½" EMT conduit for hoops
Q

Which row cover weight should I use?

Lightweight (0.5 oz) for summer insect protection (85% light), medium (1.0 oz) for spring/fall frost to 24°F (70% light), heavy (1.5 oz) for hard frost to 20°F (50% light). Use insect netting for pest control without frost needs.

  • 0.5 oz: summer use, 85% light, frost protection to 28°F, insect barrier
  • 1.0 oz: spring/fall, 70% light, protects to 24°F, most versatile
  • 1.5 oz: winter, 50% light, protects to 20°F, heavy but warmest
  • Insect netting: 90% light, no frost protection, blocks cabbage moths/beetles
  • Medium weight (1.0 oz) is the best all-purpose choice for most gardeners
Q

How tall should row cover hoops be?

Hoop height should be 6–12 inches above the tallest crop you plan to grow. For lettuce and low crops, 18 inches is enough. For tomatoes or peppers under row cover, use 3–4 ft hoops. Standard garden row cover hoops are 2–2.5 ft tall.

  • 18 inches: lettuce, spinach, carrots, and other low crops
  • 2–2.5 ft: standard height for most vegetables — peppers, beans, brassicas
  • 3–4 ft: tall crops like tomatoes, cucumbers on trellises
  • Measure from soil surface to top of hoop at center
  • Taller hoops = more wire per hoop and wider fabric needed
