Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do I calculate how much an assignment affects my grade?

Each assignment contributes to your final grade by: weighted contribution = (points earned / points possible) * weight percentage. For example, scoring 88/100 on a homework worth 20% contributes 88% * 20% = 17.6 weighted points toward your final grade out of 100.

  • Formula: contribution = (earned / possible) * weight
  • Example: 88/100 on 20% homework = 17.6 weighted points
  • A 76/100 on a 25% midterm = 19.0 weighted points
  • A 92/100 on a 15% project = 13.8 weighted points
  • Sum all contributions and remaining weight = current standing

Q

How do I find the minimum score needed on remaining work?

To find the minimum score needed: needed = (target grade - current weighted sum) / remaining weight. If you have 50.4 weighted points from 60% of the course and want a 90%, you need (90 - 50.4) / 0.40 = 99.0% on the remaining 40% of assignments.

  • Formula: needed = (target - current weighted sum) / remaining weight
  • Example: target 90%, have 50.4 from 60%, remaining 40%
  • Needed: (90 - 50.4) / 0.40 = 99.0% on remaining work
  • Over 100% means the target is not achievable
  • Adjust target grade down to find an achievable goal

Q

What if my assignment weights don't add up to 100%?

If completed weights total less than 100%, the remaining percentage represents future assignments (final exam, papers, etc.). If they exceed 100%, check your syllabus for errors. Some courses use total points instead of percentage weights, in which case each assignment's weight = its points / total course points.

  • Completed weights < 100%: remaining is future work
  • Completed weights = 100%: all work is accounted for
  • Completed weights > 100%: likely a syllabus error
  • Points-based grading: weight = assignment points / total points
  • Extra credit may cause weights to exceed 100% legitimately
Q

Does a higher-weighted assignment always matter more?

Not always. The grade impact depends on both weight AND how far your score deviates from your current average. A 50% on a 10% quiz drops your grade more than a 95% on a 30% exam if your average is already 95%. The formula is: grade change = (score - current average) * weight.

  • Impact = (score - current average) * weight
  • High weight + score near average = small impact
  • Low weight + very high/low score = moderate impact
  • A zero on a 5% assignment drops a 90% average to 85.5%
  • A perfect 100% on that same 5% assignment only raises 90% to 90.5%

Good exam95%30%+3.0 points
Perfect homework100%5%+0.75 points

Q

How should I prioritize assignments to maximize my grade?

Focus effort on assignments with the highest weight * potential improvement. If you can improve from 70% to 90% on a 30% exam, that is 6 extra points. Improving from 90% to 100% on a 5% quiz is only 0.5 points. Calculate weight * realistic score improvement for each assignment.

  • Rank by: weight * (realistic improvement) for each assignment
  • A 20-point improvement on a 30% exam = 6.0 grade points
  • A 10-point improvement on a 5% quiz = 0.5 grade points
  • Never skip a weighted assignment: a 0 is devastating
  • Diminishing returns: going from 95% to 100% barely helps

Example Calculations

1Student Targeting an A-

Inputs

Homework88/100, weight 20%
Midterm76/100, weight 25%
Project92/100, weight 15%
Target Grade90% (A-)
Remaining Weight40%

Result

Minimum Score Needed99.0%

Weighted sum: (88%*0.20) + (76%*0.25) + (92%*0.15) = 17.6 + 19.0 + 13.8 = 50.4. Needed: (90 - 50.4) / 0.40 = 39.6 / 0.40 = 99.0%. Barely achievable.

2Student Aiming for a B

Inputs

Homework88/100, weight 20%
Midterm76/100, weight 25%
Project92/100, weight 15%
Target Grade83% (B)
Remaining Weight40%

Result

Minimum Score Needed81.5%

Weighted sum: 50.4 (same as above). Needed: (83 - 50.4) / 0.40 = 32.6 / 0.40 = 81.5%. Very achievable with consistent effort on remaining work.

3One Assignment Left

Inputs

Quizzes95/100, weight 30%
Midterm82/100, weight 30%
Target Grade90% (A-)
Remaining Weight40% (final exam)

Result

Minimum Score Needed92.3%

Weighted sum: (95%*0.30) + (82%*0.30) = 28.5 + 24.6 = 53.1. Needed: (90 - 53.1) / 0.40 = 36.9 / 0.40 = 92.25%, rounded to 92.3%.

Formulas Used

Weighted Contribution

Contribution = (Earned / Possible) * Weight

Calculates how many weighted points a single assignment adds to your final grade.

Where:

Contribution= Weighted points this assignment adds to final grade
Earned= Points you scored on the assignment
Possible= Maximum points available on the assignment
Weight= Category weight as a decimal (e.g., 0.20 for 20%)

Minimum Score Needed

Needed = (Target - WeightedSum) / RemainingWeight

Calculates the minimum percentage you need on remaining assignments to reach your target course grade.

Where:

Needed= Required average percentage on remaining assignments
Target= Desired final course grade (percentage)
WeightedSum= Sum of weighted contributions from completed work
RemainingWeight= Total weight of uncompleted assignments (decimal)

Understanding Assignment Weights and Grade Impact

Every graded assignment contributes to your final grade proportionally to its weight. Understanding exactly how much each assignment is worth helps you prioritize study time, set realistic targets, and avoid surprises when final grades are posted.

The key calculation is simple: weighted contribution = (points earned / points possible) * category weight. Add up all weighted contributions from completed assignments, and you have your current grade. The remaining weight represents how much influence future assignments still have.

Use the minimum score needed feature to work backward from your target grade. If you need a 99% on remaining work to get an A, it may be more productive to aim for a B+ and focus your energy on other courses where improvement is more achievable.
