Never drop forage below 1.0% of body weight (10.1 lbs). Risk of colic and ulcers increases below this threshold.

Example Calculations

1Average Quarter Horse (BCS 5)

Inputs

Heart Girth72 inches
Body Length64 inches
Horse TypeLight / Riding Horse
BCS5 – Moderate (Ideal)

Result

Estimated Weight1,005 lbs (456 kg)
Daily Forage15.1–20.1 lbs
Concentrate0–0.5% BW
ConditionHealthy range

Weight = 72² × 64 / 330 = 331,776 / 330 = 1,005 lbs. At BCS 5, this horse needs 1.5–2.0% BW in forage = 15.1–20.1 lbs/day of hay, with minimal or no grain.

2Welsh Pony (BCS 7 – Overweight)

Inputs

Heart Girth60 inches
Body Length48 inches
Horse TypePony
BCS7 – Fleshy

Result

Estimated Weight578 lbs (262 kg)
Daily Forage8.7 lbs (max)
Concentrate0% (forage only)
GoalWeight loss

Pony formula: 60² × 48 / 299.2 = 172,800 / 299.2 = 578 lbs. At BCS 7, restrict to 1.5% BW forage (8.7 lbs/day) with no grain. Increase exercise to promote weight loss.

3Clydesdale Draft Horse (BCS 5)

Inputs

Heart Girth86 inches
Body Length76 inches
Horse TypeDraft / Heavy
BCS5 – Moderate

Result

Estimated Weight1,814 lbs (823 kg)
Daily Forage27.2–36.3 lbs
Concentrate0–0.5% BW
ConditionHealthy range

Draft formula: 86² × 76 / 310 = 562,256 / 310 = 1,814 lbs. Draft horses use divisor 310 instead of 330 to account for larger barrel circumference. Daily forage: 27–36 lbs of hay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do you estimate a horse's weight without a scale?

The most accurate field method uses two tape measurements: heart girth (around the barrel behind the elbow) and body length (point of shoulder to point of buttock). The Carroll & Huntington formula multiplies girth squared by length, then divides by 330 for standard horses.

  • Heart Girth: tape around barrel, behind elbow, over withers
  • Body Length: point of shoulder to point of buttock (straight line)
  • Formula: Weight (lbs) = Girth² × Length / 330
  • Accuracy: within ±3–5% for BCS 4–6 horses
  • Measure on exhale, horse standing square on level ground

60"55"600 lbs
72"64"1,005 lbs
78"68"1,254 lbs

Q

What is the Henneke Body Condition Score (BCS) for horses?

The Henneke scale rates horses from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (extremely fat) by evaluating fat deposits at six body areas: neck, withers, behind the shoulder, ribs, loin, and tailhead. A score of 5 is considered ideal for most horses.

  • BCS 1–3: Underweight (ribs and bones visible)
  • BCS 4–6: Healthy range (ribs felt but not seen)
  • BCS 7–9: Overweight (positive crease down back, fat deposits)
  • BCS 5 is ideal for most performance and pleasure horses
  • Broodmares may benefit from BCS 6–7 for reproduction
BCSConditionRib Visibility
1–2Emaciated/Very ThinEasily visible
3–4Thin/Moderately ThinFaintly visible
5–6Ideal/Moderately FleshyFelt, not seen
7–9Overweight to ObeseDifficult to feel
Q

How much hay should I feed my horse per day?

Most horses need 1.5–2.0% of their body weight in forage (hay or pasture) daily. A 1,000-pound horse at BCS 5 needs 15–20 lbs of hay per day. Never drop below 1.0% body weight in forage, as this increases risk of colic and gastric ulcers.

  • Maintenance (BCS 5): 1.5–2.0% BW in forage daily
  • Weight gain (BCS 1–3): 1.5–2.0% forage + 0.5–1.5% grain
  • Weight loss (BCS 7–9): 1.0–1.5% forage, no grain
  • Minimum forage: 1.0% BW (10 lbs for a 1,000-lb horse)
  • Always provide free-choice water and salt

Q

How much should a Quarter Horse weigh?

Quarter Horses typically weigh 1,000–1,300 lbs at a healthy BCS of 5–6. Smaller stock-type Quarter Horses may be closer to 1,000 lbs while halter-type animals can exceed 1,300 lbs. Use heart girth and body length measurements for an individual estimate.

  • Quarter Horse: 1,000–1,300 lbs (14.2–16 hh)
  • Thoroughbred: 1,000–1,200 lbs (15.2–17 hh)
  • Arabian: 800–1,000 lbs (14.1–15.1 hh)
  • Warmblood: 1,200–1,450 lbs (16–17.2 hh)
  • Clydesdale: 1,600–2,200 lbs (16.2–18 hh)

Q

Is the horse weight tape formula accurate?

The Carroll & Huntington formula (Girth² × Length / 330) is accurate to within ±3–5% for horses at BCS 4–6. It tends to underestimate very heavy horses and overestimate very thin ones. For ponies, a divisor of 299.2 improves accuracy due to their stockier proportions.

  • Standard formula accuracy: ±3–5% at normal BCS
  • Less accurate for BCS 1–2 (overestimates) or 8–9 (underestimates)
  • Pony divisor: 299.2 instead of 330 (stockier build)
  • Draft horse divisor: 300–315 (larger barrel proportion)
  • Livestock scales remain the gold standard for exact weight
