1Standard 28-Day Cycle
Inputs

Ovulation = March 1 + 28 - 14 = March 15. Fertile window starts = March 15 - 5 = March 10. Fertile window ends = March 15 + 1 = March 16. Next period = March 1 + 28 = March 29.

Ovulation = April 5 + 30 - 14 = April 21. Fertile window starts = April 21 - 5 = April 16. Fertile window ends = April 21 + 1 = April 22. Next period = April 5 + 30 = May 5.
Ovulation typically occurs 12-16 days before your next period (not after your last one). For a 28-day cycle, ovulation is around day 14. For a 30-day cycle, it's around day 16. For a 26-day cycle, it's around day 12. The key is counting backwards from your expected period.
| Cycle Length | Ovulation Day | Fertile Window | Best Days to Conceive |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26 days | Day 12 | Days 7-12 | Days 10-12 |
| 28 days | Day 14 | Days 9-14 | Days 12-14 |
| 30 days | Day 16 | Days 11-16 | Days 14-16 |
| 32 days | Day 18 | Days 13-18 | Days 16-18 |
The "14 days after your period" rule only works for perfect 28-day cycles. The time from ovulation to period (luteal phase) is relatively constant at 12-16 days, while the time from period to ovulation varies. That's why counting backwards from expected period is more accurate.
The fertile window is the 6-day period when pregnancy is possible: the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself. Peak fertility is the 2-3 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. Sperm survive up to 5 days; the egg only survives 12-24 hours.
| Day Relative to Ovulation | Pregnancy Chance | Timing Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 5 days before | ~10% | Possible but low |
| 3 days before | ~25% | Good timing |
| 1 day before | ~30% | Excellent timing |
| Ovulation day | ~25% | Good timing |
| 1 day after | ~0-5% | Usually too late |
Combine multiple methods for best accuracy: 1) Calendar/app tracking, 2) Basal body temperature (BBT) - rises 0.5-1°F after ovulation, 3) Cervical mucus - becomes clear and stretchy like egg white before ovulation, 4) Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) - detect LH surge 24-48 hours before.
| Method | Accuracy | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar Tracking | ±2-4 days | Free, simple | Assumes regular cycles |
| Basal Body Temp | Confirms past ovulation | Inexpensive | Shows AFTER ovulation |
| Cervical Mucus | Good for prediction | Free, natural | Takes practice |
| OPK (Urine Tests) | 24-48hr warning | Accurate, easy | Costs $15-40/month |
| Fertility Monitors | Most accurate | Tracks multiple signs | Expensive ($100-300) |
Common ovulation signs: 1) Egg-white cervical mucus (clear, stretchy), 2) Mild pelvic pain on one side (mittelschmerz), 3) Slight temperature rise (0.5-1°F), 4) Increased sex drive, 5) Breast tenderness, 6) Light spotting, 7) Positive OPK test.
Not all women experience all signs, and some notice none. Cervical mucus changes are the most reliable natural sign that precedes ovulation. Temperature rise confirms ovulation happened but only after the fact. Combining signs gives the clearest picture.
This calculator estimates ovulation based on average cycle patterns, accurate to ±2-4 days for women with regular cycles (26-32 days). Actual ovulation varies due to stress, illness, travel, and hormonal factors. For trying to conceive, combine with other tracking methods.
Even women with regular cycles can have occasional variation. Ovulation can be delayed by stress, illness, extreme exercise, or weight changes. If you're trying to conceive, don't rely solely on calendar-based predictions - add OPKs or BBT tracking for confirmation.
Pregnancy is extremely unlikely outside the 6-day fertile window. The egg only survives 12-24 hours after ovulation, and sperm can survive up to 5 days (rarely longer). If intercourse occurs more than 5-6 days before ovulation or any time after, pregnancy is very unlikely.
While pregnancy outside the fertile window is very rare, it's not impossible. Sperm have occasionally survived 6-7 days in ideal conditions. Women with irregular or short cycles may ovulate earlier than expected. If avoiding pregnancy, don't rely on calendar-based timing alone.
