Example Calculations

11500m in 25:30

Inputs

Distance1500m
Time25:30

Result

Pace / 100m1:42

25:30 = 1530 sec. 1530 / 15 = 102 sec per 100m = 1:42.

2400m in 6:50, 200m in 3:10 (CSS)

Inputs

400m6:50
200m3:10

Result

CSS Pace1:50 / 100m

T400=410s, T200=190s. CSS speed = 200/(410−190) = 0.91 m/s. Pace = 100/0.91 = 110s = 1:50.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What is a good swim pace per 100m?

For recreational swimmers, 2:00–2:30 per 100m is average. Competitive swimmers range from 1:00–1:30. Elite swimmers go under 1:00. Your pace depends on stroke efficiency, fitness, and distance.

  • Beginner: 2:30–3:00 per 100m
  • Intermediate: 1:45–2:15 per 100m
  • Advanced: 1:15–1:45 per 100m
  • Elite: under 1:10 per 100m

Q

What is Critical Swim Speed (CSS)?

CSS is your threshold pace—the fastest speed you can sustain without accumulating lactate. It is calculated from your 400m and 200m time trial results: CSS = (400 − 200) / (T400 − T200).

  • CSS = 200m / (T400 − T200)
  • Train at CSS pace for endurance
  • CSS + 5 sec = recovery pace
  • CSS − 5 sec = VO2max pace
Q

How do I improve my swim pace?

Focus on technique first—better body position and catch mechanics improve pace more than fitness alone. Drill work, threshold sets at CSS pace, and reducing strokes per length all build speed.

  • Reduce drag: horizontal body position
  • Improve catch: early vertical forearm
  • Build endurance: CSS-pace sets (10×100m)
  • Track strokes per length (goal: 14–18 for 25m)
Q

Are yards and meters pace different?

Yes. A 25-yard pool is 8.6% shorter than a 25-meter pool, so your yards pace will be faster. To convert: multiply yards time by 1.1 to estimate meters pace, or divide meters time by 1.1 for yards.

  • 100 yards = 91.44 meters
  • Yards pace × 1.1 ≈ meters pace
  • SCY pools are most common in the US
  • Open water uses meters
