Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much water should I carry per hour of hiking?

The standard recommendation is 0.5 liters (17 oz) per hour for moderate conditions. Hot weather or strenuous hiking can double that to 1 liter per hour.

  • Cool/easy: 0.3–0.5 L per hour
  • Moderate conditions: 0.5–0.75 L per hour
  • Hot/strenuous: 0.75–1.0 L per hour
  • Extreme heat: 1.0–1.5 L per hour

Q

Does body weight affect water needs?

Yes. Larger hikers sweat more and need proportionally more water. A 200-lb hiker needs about 33% more water than a 150-lb hiker under the same conditions.

  • Base rate scaled by bodyweight/150
  • 120 lbs: ~80% of base rate
  • 170 lbs: ~113% of base rate
  • 200 lbs: ~133% of base rate
Q

How does temperature affect hiking hydration?

Hot weather dramatically increases water needs. Hiking in 90°F heat requires 60% more water than a mild 60°F day due to increased sweating.

  • Below 50°F: 75% of base rate
  • 50–70°F: standard base rate
  • 70–85°F: 130% of base rate
  • Above 85°F: 160% of base rate
Q

What are signs of dehydration on the trail?

Early signs include dark urine, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. By the time you feel thirsty, you may already be mildly dehydrated.

  • Dark yellow urine: mild dehydration
  • Headache and fatigue: moderate
  • Dizziness, rapid heartbeat: severe
  • Drink before thirsty as prevention
