A senior cat benefits from a shorter tree with easy ramp access, low platform spacing (8–10 inches), and padded surfaces for arthritic joints.
A cat tree should be at least 3–6 feet tall for most adult cats. Active cats thrive with 5–6 foot multi-level trees, while senior cats do best with 2–3 foot trees with ramp access. Keep total height under 8 feet for safety, as falls above that height can injure cats.
A standard 3-inch diameter post needs about 15 feet of 3/8-inch sisal rope per linear foot of post height. A typical 30-inch tall post requires approximately 37–40 feet of rope.
A basic DIY cat tree requires plywood for platforms, 4x4 lumber for posts, sisal rope for scratching surfaces, carpet or faux fur for padding, and wood screws. A two-platform tree costs $40–$80 in materials compared to $80–$200 for a comparable store-bought version.
Plan one platform per cat plus one extra for variety. Each platform should be at least 15" × 15" for an average cat. Include at least one enclosed hideaway or hammock, as cats need private resting spots in addition to open perches.
The base should be at least one-third the height of the tree and made from heavy 3/4-inch plywood. For tall trees, attach the top to a wall bracket or use a ceiling-to-floor tension pole. Weight the base with sandbags or tile for additional stability.
