Q

How many watts do I need for a room?

Depends on room size, speaker sensitivity, and target volume. With 90 dB sensitivity speakers at 10 ft: background music needs ~1W, normal listening ~10W, party volume ~30W, concert level ~100W+.

  • Background (70 dB): 0.1-1W with 90 dB speakers
  • Normal listening (80 dB): 1-10W
  • Party/loud (90 dB): 10-50W
  • Concert (100 dB): 50-200W
  • Always add 6 dB headroom (4x watts)

What is speaker sensitivity and why does it matter?

Sensitivity is the SPL a speaker produces with 1 watt at 1 meter, rated in dB. Higher sensitivity = less power needed. Every 3 dB increase in sensitivity halves the wattage requirement.

  • Typical range: 83-100 dB (1W/1m)
  • Low sensitivity (<86 dB): needs lots of power
  • Average (87-92 dB): most home speakers
  • High sensitivity (93+ dB): horn speakers, PA cabs
  • Every +3 dB sensitivity = half the watts needed

Why do I need headroom?

Music has peaks 6-10 dB above average level. Without headroom, peaks clip and distort. A 6 dB headroom means 4x your average power. If normal listening needs 10W, your amp should deliver at least 40W.

  • 6 dB headroom = 4× average power
  • 10 dB headroom = 10× (for high dynamics)
  • Clipping damages tweeters
  • Underpowered amps clip more than overpowered
  • Better to have extra watts than too few

Does doubling watts double the volume?

No. Doubling watts adds only 3 dB, barely noticeable. To sound "twice as loud" (+10 dB) you need 10x the power. Going from 10W to 100W doubles perceived loudness. This is why sensitivity matters more than raw watts.

  • +3 dB (2x watts): barely noticeable
  • +6 dB (4x watts): clearly louder
  • +10 dB (10x watts): perceived as "twice as loud"
  • 100W vs 200W: only 3 dB difference
  • High-sensitivity speakers are more efficient than raw watts
