Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much fuel do I need for a backpacking trip?

A canister stove uses about 0.35 oz of fuel per boil. With 3 boils per day for a 4-day trip, you need about 5.5 oz — one 8 oz canister is sufficient with a buffer.

  • Canister stove: 0.35 oz per boil
  • Alcohol stove: 1.0 oz per boil
  • White gas: 0.4 oz per boil
  • 3 boils/day typical: breakfast, dinner, hot drink

Alcohol1.0 oz~15 ozBring bottles
White Gas0.4 oz~6 oz11 oz bottle
Q

Does altitude affect fuel consumption?

Yes. Water boils at lower temperatures at altitude but takes the same energy. Cold and wind increase fuel use. Above 5,000 ft, add 10% per additional 5,000 ft.

  • Sea level to 5,000 ft: standard usage
  • 5,000–10,000 ft: +10% fuel
  • 10,000–15,000 ft: +20% fuel
  • Wind: use windscreen, saves 30–50%
Q

How does cold weather affect stove fuel?

Below 32°F, canister fuel pressure drops and burn efficiency decreases by about 15%. White gas stoves perform better in cold than canister stoves.

  • Above 50°F: normal efficiency
  • 32–50°F: +5% fuel needed
  • Below 32°F: +15% for canisters
  • Tip: warm canisters in sleeping bag overnight
Q

What counts as one boil?

One boil is heating roughly 0.5 liters (2 cups) of water to a rolling boil. A typical freeze-dried meal needs one boil. Morning coffee or tea is another boil.

  • 1 boil = ~0.5 L water to boiling
  • Breakfast: 1 boil (oatmeal + coffee)
  • Dinner: 1 boil (freeze-dried meal)
  • Extra: hot drinks, soup = add boils
