Mounting Tips

Stud Finder: Always mount into wall studs, not drywall alone. Use a stud finder and verify with a nail.
Fireplace Mounting: Above-fireplace mounts place the TV too high for comfort. Use a pull-down tilting mount if unavoidable.
Cable Management: Run cables through the wall using a recessed cable plate kit for a clean look. Check local codes first.

For a home gym or standing desk, a 65" TV centered at 60" (standing eye level) places the bottom edge at 44.1" and the top at 75.9" from the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What height should a TV be mounted on the wall?

The center of the TV should be at seated eye level, which is about 42 inches from the floor for most people. For a 55-inch TV, this puts the bottom edge at roughly 28.5 inches and the top edge at 55.5 inches from the floor. Adjust based on your actual eye height when seated on your couch or chair.

  • Seated eye level averages 42 inches from the floor (varies by furniture height)
  • Standing eye level averages 60 inches from the floor
  • A 55" TV at 42" center has its bottom edge at 28.5" from the floor
  • A 65" TV at 42" center has its bottom edge at 26.1" from the floor
  • Mounting above a fireplace (50–60") is too high for comfortable viewing without a tilt mount

Q

How far should I sit from my TV?

For 4K TVs, the THX recommended minimum distance is 1.2 times the diagonal. For a 55-inch 4K TV, that is 66 inches (5.5 feet). The SMPTE standard recommends the TV fill a 30-degree field of view, which works out to about 7.5 feet for a 55-inch screen. Most rooms work best between these two distances.

  • THX 4K minimum: 1.2× diagonal (55" TV = 5.5 ft minimum)
  • SMPTE 30° standard: TV fills 30° of field of view (55" TV = ~7.5 ft)
  • 1080p content: 1.6× diagonal recommended (55" = 7.3 ft)
  • Too close: visible pixels on 1080p content, eye strain
  • Too far: lose detail and immersion, especially on 4K content

Q

Should I tilt my TV if it is mounted above eye level?

Yes. If the TV center is more than 2 inches above eye level, a downward tilt improves the viewing angle and reduces neck strain. A TV mounted 10 inches above eye level at 8 feet viewing distance needs about a 6-degree downward tilt. Most tilting wall mounts offer 5–15 degrees of adjustment.

  • Tilt angle = arctan(height_difference / viewing_distance)
  • Above-fireplace mounts typically need 10–15° of tilt
  • Full-motion mounts allow tilt, swivel, and extension from the wall
  • Fixed mounts are cheaper but offer no tilt adjustment
  • MantelMount-style pull-down brackets are ideal for above-fireplace placement
Q

How do I calculate TV dimensions from the diagonal?

For a 16:9 TV, the height is the diagonal divided by 2.04, and the width is the diagonal divided by 1.15. A 55-inch 16:9 TV measures approximately 27.0 inches tall and 47.9 inches wide. Ultrawide 21:9 screens are wider and shorter for the same diagonal measurement.

  • 16:9 height = diagonal ÷ 2.04 (diagonal × 0.4899)
  • 16:9 width = diagonal × 0.8716
  • 21:9 height = diagonal × 0.3939 (shorter than 16:9)
  • 21:9 width = diagonal × 0.9191 (wider than 16:9)
  • Bezel adds 0.5–1.5" to each dimension on modern TVs

75"65.4"36.7"68.9"29.5"
Q

Can I mount a TV on drywall without studs?

It is not recommended for TVs over 25 pounds. Standard drywall anchors hold 15–50 pounds, but TVs plus mounts can weigh 40–80+ pounds. Always mount into at least two wall studs (typically 16" apart). If studs are not in the right position, use a plywood mounting board anchored into studs, then mount the bracket to the board.

  • Wall studs support 80–100+ pounds each when properly fastened
  • Toggle bolts in drywall: 50 lb max per bolt (not recommended for large TVs)
  • Snap toggles: slightly stronger at 65 lb, but still risky for heavy sets
  • Use a stud finder and confirm with a nail before drilling
  • Plywood backer board (3/4") spanning 2–3 studs is the safest no-stud solution
