Each rabbit needs at least 12 sq ft of colony housing area, plus 24 sq ft of exercise space if provided separately. Does need 1 nesting box each for kindling. Colony setups require significantly more space than individual cages.
Provide one nesting box per doe in the colony. If does kindle at the same time, each needs her own 12×18 inch box with raised sides. Place boxes in quiet corners away from the main activity area.
Colony raising gives rabbits more natural behavior space and social interaction, but requires more total area, careful buck management, and disease monitoring. Cages give more control over breeding and prevent fighting.
Dirt floor with deep straw bedding is best for colony rabbits. It allows natural digging behavior and is easy on their feet. Avoid wire flooring in colonies — it causes sore hocks when rabbits cannot rest on solid surfaces.
